While Jesse Eisenberg was over at Aria getting scenes in for Now You See Me, Mark Ruffalo and Chris Browning gave the newly lively Golden Gate a coup with scenes at that joint.
They filmed at night, working into the early morning both inside the casino and out on Fremont. Even Golden Gate co-owner Derek Stevens stood in as an extra. Should’ve recruited Andy Garcia.

Vegas sold its first 50-cent shrimp cocktail at this relic at One Fremont St. (the address pretty much says it all), which dates back to 1906. Millions of tangy crustaceans later, the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino defiantly stands — no small feat in the hotel-implosion capital of the world — having evolved with the times while preserving its centenarian-ish vibe. A hundred years ago, a room here would’ve set you back a buck. Prices have adjusted, but not all that much for shrimp cocktail, which will run you just a cool $1.99 now and, hopefully, forever.

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – When the Hotel Nevada opened back in 1906 at One Fremont Street, it really signaled the birth of downtown Las Vegas.

Now more than 100 years later, the owners of the hotel, which is now known as the Golden Gate, want to bring it back to its glory days.

The owners are planing an expansion which will include a 35,000-square-foot, five-story luxury tower with 16 hotel suites, including two penthouses on the fifth floor.

In addition to its new tower and suites, the Golden Gate’s boutique hotel features 106 recently remodeled rooms with a vintage Vegas ambiance.

The casino floor will also be extended and a new high-limit gaming pit will feature the casino’s signature dancing dealers — a modern throw-back to flappers from the roaring 20s.

A new lobby will display artifacts, such as a 1906 Kellogg telephone and original gaming ledgers from 1907, from the hotel’s notable past and the property will boast three bars.

And, of course, it will still offer its famous shrimp cocktail — the “Best Tail in Town” — which the company introduced to the casino scene in the 1950s.

Renovations are scheduled for completion by 2012.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) – One Las Vegas’ oldest hotel is currently in the middle of a major renovation project – its first facelift in more than 50 years.

News 3’s Michelle Velez is inside the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino this morning with the report.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A more than century-old downtown Las Vegas hotel is starting renovations it says will add contemporary flair to a place best known for poker chips, whisky and shrimp cocktail.

Golden Gate Hotel & Casino officials announced Monday the expansion will add a five-story building with 14 suites and two top-floor penthouses at the key Main Street and Fremont Street location.

Casino executives told the City Council last year that its $12 million overhaul would take several months.

The property dates to 1906. In recent decades, it carved a niche serving cheap shrimp cocktail.

The Golden Gate recently remodeled 106 rooms, and co-owner and chief executive Derek Stevens says in a statement that the expansion should help begin a new chapter for the historic property.

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) – Construction is expected to finish this summer on a new hotel tower at the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

When completed, the 106-year-old property will open a new lobby and porte-cochere to guests in the rear of the property at 1 Fremont St.

The five-story tower will include 16 suites and two 1,600-square-foot luxury suites, according to the property’s website.

A high limit area and deli are also part of the expansion.

The Golden Gate opened on Fremont Street in 1906 and has remained popular due to its historic appeal and now famous $2.99 shrimp cocktail.

Ownership plans to decorate the new lobby with artifacts from the hotel’s past, including an antique Kellogg telephone and a registration book from 1907.

Co-owner Mark Brandenburg says it’s important to keep the history alive. “We find that people really love the Las Vegas ‘mystique.’ They want something authentic. They like something boutique and personal. But they also want the fun that is Las Vegas,” he said.

The Golden Gate is the second Fremont Street property to announce a renovation this year. Last week, the Fitzgeralds changed its name to The D and unveiled plans for a new exterior façade, casino space and remodeled rooms.

Desert Rock Enterprises, which owns The D, also owns a 50 percent stake in the Golden Gate.

Local Claudia Holmes started visiting the Golden Gate about ten years ago. She says the revitalization downtown is really something, and it’s getting better every day. “It’s a really fun, and now safe place to be. I prefer it over the chaos of the strip,” she said.
